As has been tradition for the past few years, students will be greeted by staff and student volunteers with the Orientation week committee as they meet at Ganong Hall lecture theatre for the kick-off event.

The event sets the tone for a week filled with activities, and includes several games to be played by the first year students, who will also have the opportunity to win several prizes.

“We’ve got alot of great stuff planned for the week” says Orientation week coordinator Kjeld Conyers-Steede.

Orientation week is a big commitment, that requires lots of planning, and Conyers-Steede feels he’s put the time and effort into making the week a success.

“I’m nervous, but I’m also really excited to see all the frosh and just really hope that they all have as much fun this week as I did planning all the events and activities this summer,” says Conyers-Steede, “and that they take the opportunity to get to meet new friends and build new relationships”.

Following the kick-off event students will head to their faculty orientation where they will get to meet with others in their faculty as well as their advisors.

Lunch will be served in the baird dining hall in the student centre, and is a short break before the Amazing Race kicks off.

“The amazing race is definitely one of the big events for us”, says Conyers-Steede.

The race begins in the quad, where students will form teams to compete for prizes.

“There are several stations, and the challenges range in difficulty. The one thing I can say about the race, without giving too much away, is that students will really get to know the campus all while getting the chance to win great prizes.”

For students, that means a jam packed day of activities and getting to know their campus, and for organizers it means a hopefully rewarding day and seeing all the hard work come to realization.

Orientation activities continue on Wednesday, when students head uptown for Shinerama. Super Tuesday kicks off at UNB’s Saint John campus at 9:30am September 8th.
