It’s that time of year again, folks – the SRC is hosting their annual Sex Week, and as is tradition, this year is full of super cool, sexy events. While the title may be off-putting for people who are uncomfortable with discussing sex in public, you shouldn’t be so quick to judge – according to Jenna Evans, VP Social of the SRC, the whole point of Sex Week is to “normalize the topic of sex”.

The events will take place from February 13th – 17th, and they are all free-of-charge for students.

Monday’s event, a Condom Buffet, was canceled due to the storm sweeping Atlantic Canada. Instead, condoms will be given out to students as part of Sex Toy Bingo on Wednesday night.

“We want to promote safe sex,” Evans explains, handing out free condoms is important, “and we want our students to know we are here to support them, and sexual health, on campus.”

On Tuesday, from 3:30 – 4:30pm, the SRC will be hosting a Sex Week Educational Session where councillor April Jendrosch will be doing a presentation on sexual assault and consent.

“April is a Campus Sexual Support Advocate (CSASA) at UNBSJ and we are looking forward to hearing her presentation,” Evans says. “A presentation like this will help educate and inform students [about sexual assault and consent] in a healthy, inclusive, and safe environment.”

Wednesday evening, from 7:00 – 9:00pm in the Whitebone Lounge, will be Sex Toy Bingo. According to Evans, this event is geared toward normalizing the topic of sex and everything related to it. SRC representatives will be providing educational information throughout the evening regarding the topic.

There will be a Dating Game Show on Thursday, from 7:00 – 9:00pm in the Whitebone Lounge. Students interested in participating are encouraged to sign up ahead of time by emailing social@unbsrc.ca or by visiting the SRC office in the Student Centre.

“This is a light hearted, sober event to encourage students to mix and mingle,” Evans states. “We hope to have students participate in it and meet new friends at UNBSJ.”

Finally, from 10:00pm – 2:00am on Friday night, the SRC will be hosting Sexy Sangria Night. This is the final event of the week, and will take place at Howler’s Bar in the Student Centre. Evans informed The Baron that there will be treats, sangria – and karaoke! Who doesn’t love karaoke?

“[Sex Week] is important at UNBSJ, because we all need to be educated about sex, consent, and sexual assault,” Evans adds. “Our goal is to create a comfortable space to help normalize the topic of sex, and to have fun doing it.”
