Announcement made October 26 via email

As per the email sent out to UNB students, faculty, and staff on Monday, October 26 by Vice-President Dr. Petra Hauf, this decision was made as the physical store is no longer financially sustainable due to low sales, increased costs, and the current pandemic.

The former owner and manager of the bookstore, Follet Canada, decided to close the bookstore in August. However, they needed time to set up an alternative before the closure.

Textbooks and course materials

Although the physical store will be unavailable, students will still be able to buy textbooks and class materials through the UNB online store and the orders will be processed through the UNB Fredericton bookstore.

The orders shipped to the UNB Saint John campus from the Fredericton campus will not be charged a shipping fee. Students also have the option to ship their orders to their homes, but those shipping fees are not covered.

Gift cards and refunds

According to the Director of Communications, Sonya Gilks, gift cards will still be accepted for the online store.

When it comes to pending orders, those will be processed through the Fredericton campus bookstore.

Future of the bookstore

“We will look into ways to have a physical campus store again in the future,” says Gilks, although the future location is unknown.

According to the notice, this change “will not have a negative impact on our students or faculty.”

More on this to come.
