Welcome back UNB Saint John students!
I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new Editor-in-Chief of The Baron. I am excited to continue the work of the editors before me and to continue advocating for student voices and student stories.
About me:
I first joined the Baron in January 2023 as a staff writer and spent a semester writing on topics like the Child Care Crisis in NB, Fast Fashion, and events on campus! For the 2023-2024 academic year, I joined the team again as the Copy Editor. This is where I learned the ins and outs of the company and knew I wanted to do more. I was very lucky to have such a gracious EIC who took me under her wing and helped me take over.
These letters from the editor were created by our previous EIC and I have decided to continue them because it is important that we keep UNB Saint John students up to date on all things going on at The Baron. After all, we are YOUR paper!
New to the Baron:
This year has brought a lot of change to the Baron. We have welcomed many new staff writers and I am so excited to see what they bring to our team! New to our writing team this year are Ridhima Dixit, Will Foley, Paige Fletcher, Sarah Harrigan, and Claire Bentley. Keep an eye out for Claire’s articles written completely in French!
Also joining me this year is our new Copy Editor, Isabelle Fleming. She joined the Baron in the fall of 2023 and has written many impressive articles. She has shown great initiative with the team. We both attended the Clubs & Societies Fair at Orientation and got to talk to many first-years about our amazing company. We are also welcoming our new office manager, Tyler Williams to the team who has already helped the Baron become a more efficient company.
Lastly, the Baron has a new photographer, Bailey Young. Bailey has previous experience in journalism and we are all excited to have her joining our team!
Update on Bill C-18:
Unfortunately, Bill C-18 is still in effect and we are unable to post online about our articles or things happening on campus. We at the Baron appreciate your continued support through these trying times and greatly appreciate everyone who continues to spread the word about us! I want to send a special thank you to the UNBSRC who have supported us and shared our content for the past year.
You can learn more about Bill C-18 here
Our publications:
I want to emphasize that the Baron is run by students, funded by students, and most importantly, it is FOR the students. So, if there are any stories that YOU want to see talked about, scan the QR code below to let us know!
Feel free to drop by our office located on the second floor of the Thomas J. Condon Student Center to learn more about the Baron or talk about story leads!
Additionally, the Baron will continue to print physical copies of our newspaper at the end of every semester. We noticed how much students and faculty enjoyed and responded to it last year and will continue to listen to your feedback!
Concluding thoughts:
As the first semester begins, I want to encourage all students to get involved and take advantage of the opportunities UNB has to offer. Check out the awesome events the SRC runs or find a club or society on campus to join! Staying updated on the Baron is a great way to keep up on all things student life at UNB.
I am looking forward to the year ahead of us and I can’t wait for you all to read new articles by my amazing and hardworking team.
I wish you all a wonderful semester!
Kylie Mackenzie
