SJ Seawolves Put a Stop to STU Tommies: September 18, 2024

In a match with memorable moments for both sides, the UNB Saint John’s Seawolves’ women’s soccer team defeated the STU Tommies at the Canada Games Stadium with a finishing score of 1-0. Largely thanks to Seawolf goalie Casey Grant-Spin’s shut-out showing on the net, the Seawolves successfully blockaded the Tommies and beautifully bested them. Asked later about her exemplary performance, Grant-Spin declared triumphantly, “It felt really good, especially against STU. They’re definitely our biggest rival this season.” Not to say it was one-sided though, STU’s #5 Caitlyn Steeves (3 SH, 2 SOG) and #9 Zoe Vautour (2 SH) both delivered strong offensive performances that kept the Seawolves on their toes.

In the end, however, Seawolf striker #3, Scarlette McDonald, made the decisive shot that told the tale when she scored on STU goalie Laura Erb in the first half. Outside of this highlight, the game was a war of attrition which ultimately won the day for the Seawolves. With this win under their belts, the Seawolves are set to show a tour de force in their Saturday game against the Crandall University Chargers. Coming off their loss against MSVU, the Chargers will be looking to get back in the win column with their Saturday showing so, soccer fans should look alive.

SJ Seawolves Shown Up by St. Thomas: September 19, 2024

Giving the Saint John Seawolves’s men’s soccer team a run for their money, the St. Thomas Tommies cashed out at the Canada Games Stadium with a final score of 2-0 over the home team. With what was a slow and steady first round that, like the classic fable, turned around in the second half; the tortoises that were the Tommies trumped the Seawolves. This sweeping streak that set St. Thomas square on the leaderboard in the ACAA can be credited to the impressive offensive performances of Brett Springer (3 SH, 2 SOG, 1 A) and Elias Stiphout (2 SH, 1 SOG) who scored the game winning goals in the second half.

While the Seawolves fought valiantly to turn the tide with players like Malek Karoui (1SH) and Pedro Pinteus (1 SH, 1 SOG) making strong attempts on the STU net– it was to no avail. With the Seawolves now looking to reclaim their status in the rankings, it should be interesting to see how their next game on Saturday against the Crandall University Chargers plays out.
