The St Thomas University Tommies were in town on Wednesday, Jan. 15, to square off against the UNB Saint John Seawolves, in women’s volleyball action. The match was a hard fought affair, with both sides refusing to back down. In the end though, the Seawolves came out on top, winning by score of 3-1.

The first set started off slowly for UNB Saint John, as STU jumped out to an early lead. However, the Seawolves fought back and went on to win the set, 27-25.

The second set again saw STU jump out to an early lead. While UNB Saint John would battle back for the second time in a row, there would be no comeback victory in the second set, as the Tommies held on, to take the set 25-22.

Looking to regain the momentum, the Seawolves’ offence came alive during the third set. STU couldn’t muster a comeback of their own and UNB Saint John easily took the third set 25-14.

Sensing an opportunity to finish the match, UNB Saint John came out strong to start the fourth set. However, the Tommies would not go down without a fight, as they battled hard to force a fifth and deciding set. Ultimately, the Seawolves held on to win the set and the match, by a score of 25-22.

The Seawolves were led by Alison Stymiest who finished with 12 kills and 13 defensive digs. Emily Fitzpatrick had 37 assists for the Seawolves.

Chelsea Bringloe had nine kills for the Tommies, while Emily Cronkite had a match-high 15 defensive digs.

The Seawolves made up ground in the race for a playoff position and now have a record of 3-4 while the Tommies drop to 5-4.
