Beautiful Music: Saint John String Quartet Winter Music Concert Series

READING TIME: 2 MINUTES

Amidst the general chatter of the Hans W. Klohn Commons, between conversations and the clack of keyboards, a single note rises into the air. Everything suddenly pauses for a moment. Attention is turned towards the back, where the Saint John String Quartet is warming up for this day’s installment of the Lorenzo Society’s winter music series.

The Lorenzo Society, founded in 1975, is an Arts NB program that celebrates artistic expression from VOX magazine to readings to the free music concert series in the Commons. The string quartet’s first performance of the Winter series was very special, as they were honouring founding member Chris Buckley, who had passed away in December, by playing some of his favourite pieces. The musicians are all artists in residence at UNB, and are incredibly talented.

Their first performance this winter consisted of music from Mozart to modern to Maritime Celtic. The entire Commons was silent for their performance. Students paused their activities, turning towards the quartet. Many non-student patrons were up front, focused entirely on the music. Head librarian David Ross sat down with a good book, enjoying the music. A family of six stepped up as well to join in on the joyful expression of music. Between songs, the quartet would share stories about Buckley, finishing the performance with a beautiful farewell song.

Lorenzo Society coordinator Dr. Gemma Marr asks that students support the quartet every Wednesday, and invites people to attend a special performance, with added percussion, at the BMO Theatre on January 25th. The quartet are happy to play, and it would make their day to see people who are happy to listen.
