I’ve been a student at UNBSJ for five years now, but it wasn’t until my fourth year that I began working for The Baron. I started out small, only writing a residence column, but I was eventually asked to fill the open position of sports writer.

I’ve always enjoyed watching sports but I never thought I would be writing about them. Needless to say I was nervous and worried, because I honestly had no clue what I was doing. However, as the semester went on and the job carried into the next school year, I got the hang of sports writing and came to really love it. As an English major, writing the sports section became a way for me to combine my love of writing and interest in sports.

I would have to say that one of the best things about my job is getting paid to watch sports. Who wouldn’t want to do that? Yes, having to watch about eight games a weekend is time consuming, but I enjoyed every minute of it. My favourite part was having the opportunity to watch as the players grew individually and as a team over the course of the season.

The Baron and sports writing have become a huge part of my university life and my fellow writers, a whimsical blend of misfits and creative minds, I now call my friends. With graduation only a couple months away, it saddens me to say goodbye to this makeshift family, but as I move on with my education I’ll always remember the lesson I learned while working for The Baron and the people who I’ve come to know and love.
