Debates are typically associated with contentious political conflicts of high stakes, such as the one between Trump and Biden. However, talks are about more than just individuals arguing; they are also about ideas being discussed. This is the guiding philosophy of the newly established UNB Saint John Debate Club, where, as one member, Nathan, noted during the group’s inaugural meeting, the emphasis is on opposing ideas rather than persons.
Matthew Heans started the group to give students a polite, safe space to voice their opinions. This is the place for serious, civil conversations, not flame wars. Matthew described it as “a room full of intellectual disorder”, but do not let that deceive you. This insanity has a purpose.
At the club’s inaugural meeting on September 18th, some major concepts for how the group would function were presented. A key lesson learned was that the group will adopt the Oxford Debate Union format. The proposal and the opposition are the two sides in this framework, which is quite simple. To ensure that every voice is heard and that ideas are fairly challenged, one side argues for the motion and the other opposes it.
The club provides more than just a platform for honed debate and public speaking abilities. In addition, it is a polite and thought-provoking environment where students may ask questions of one another and discuss ideas. It’s a special place where you can push your intellectual limits—part classroom, part intellectual battlefield.
The guidelines are straightforward: participants are required to respect fundamental human rights and are free to debate anyone’s personal opinions. Apart from that, it is entirely up to you whether you want to talk or just listen.
The initial meeting, which was attended by about twelve persons, also decided on the future format. Every month, there will be two meetings: the first is for ideation, and the second is for the real argument. Future subjects will be announced on the club’s Instagram account,@unbsjdebateclub, and Matthew is always delighted to hear from new people.
Thus, this club provides an excellent forum for discussing a range of topics, regardless of your preference for lively debates or simply hearing opposing viewpoints. If you want to listen in or have something to say, this could be the ideal place for you.
