Week two at UNB is going out with a bang . . . literally.

On Thursday, the Fredericton Fire Department arrived on the UNBF campus to respond to a small explosion.

The explosion occurred in Head Hall and the building was evacuated. Fortunately, the two students present in the lab were assessed by paramedics and are uninjured.

Sonya Gilks, a spokesperson for UNB, said the explosion was caused by pressure building up in a container that contained hydrochloric acid and sugar.

Gilks also said that it was not really an explosion, just a loud “popping” sound.

WorkSafe NB was contacted and is satisfied with how things were handled.

The explosion was contained to one room and was cleaned using water and baking soda.
