If you went to the clubs and societies expo during orientation week, you may have noticed the presence of a new society at one of the tables. UNB Saint John’s Pre-Medicine Society is a brand-new society designed for students who are planning on, or thinking about, going to medical school after their undergrad. As stated on their Instagram, the goal of the Pre-Med Society is “to provide mentorship, resources, and opportunities that help you navigate the path to medical school admissions.” To get more information about this interesting new society, the Baron reached out to Yasmin Shaheen, President of the Pre-Medicine Society, for more information.  

Meet UNB Saint John’s Brand-New Pre-Med Society!

When asked what made her want to create the Pre-Med Society, Yasmin explained that with so many pre-med students on this campus, it was time for them to have their own “dedicated community” here at UNB Saint John. She also understands that “pre-med culture can sometimes feel toxic and discouraging, which takes a toll on students’ confidence.” This society aims instead to be “supportive and encouraging,” and to “build a community that offers mentorship, networking, and opportunities to connect.” If you are looking for resources and support on your journey to medical school, this is the society for you. 

Yasmins biggest advice for pre-med students is to “always remember why you want to pursue medicine in the first place because that motivation will keep you grounded.” It is also vital to not “compare yourself to other pre-med students, because everyone’s path to medicine looks different.” She encourages pre-medicine students to reach out and ask questions, because information isn’t always readily available. “Taking the initiative to seek [information] out is what will keep you ahead.” 

If this society interests you, keep an eye out for their upcoming trivia event, “Are You Smarter Than A Med Student?”. During this event, “undergraduate students will go head-to-head with medical students” to answer trivia questions. The Pre-Med Society will be hosting other events this year, such as “a volunteer trip, a Q&A session with medical students, and much more.” Keep an eye out for more information on their Instagram, newsletter, and Teams.
