The hosting UNB Saint John Seawolves took on the University of Maine Presque-Isle Owls in women’s 2015 CAN-AM Classic basketball action Saturday evening.

Being the third game of the Classic and the Seawolves first, the Seawolves pulled together to win this tightly contested exhibition match 69-61 after being outscored by the Owls 16-11 in the fourth quarter.

Outscoring the Owls through the first three quarters, the Seawolves won this game on three points made thanks to the Seawolves making 50% of their three point shot attempts in the first half.

Veteran players Christie Van Steeg and Rachel Jefferson combined for a total of six made three point shots on the night.

The difference maker for the Seawolves, Van Steeg, tallied a total of 29 points, 10 rebounds and a 0.375 three point field goal percentage – a percentage that matched the team’s overall average.  Van Steeg also was 80% from the free throw.

Jefferson also had an impressive outing, recording 17 points and 5 rebounds.

The Owls’ Rebecca Campbell led both teams with 11 blocks through the forty minutes.

Playing the full forty minutes, University of Maine Presque-Isle’s Darby Toth totaled 17 points, 6 rebounds, and an impressive 0.375 three point field goal percentage.

Next year, the Seawolves will travel to the University of Maine Presque-Isle, who are hosting the annual CAN-AM Classic in January 2016.
