The UNB Saint John women’s basketball team played host to the league-leading St. Thomas Tommies on Wednesday, Feb. 4. The Seawolves were looking to make up ground in the playoff hunt, but the Tommies demonstrated why they are the first place team in the ACAA and the second ranked team in the CCAA, easily taking the game by score of 79-45.

The first quarter started off well for the Seawolves, as they took advantage of a Tommies team that was slow to start. However, STU found its game late in the quarter and finished out the quarter up 21-17 over the Seawolves.

The Tommies’ defense stepped up big time in the second quarter and smothered any potential Seawolves attack. This coupled with their strong rebound game, proved too much for the Seawolves, as UNB Saint John was held to just two points and trailed 17-19 at half time.

The third quarter was much of the same for the Tommies, who continued their dominant play and put up another 22 points in the quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Seawolves outscore the Tommies, 16-10. However, the lead was too much and the Tommies held on for the win, 79-45.

St. Thomas was led by Kelly Vass who had 12 points and nine rebounds. Lindy MacDonald and Carissa McTague each added 12 points for the Tommies. Rachel Jefferson and Britanny Mallory each scored 10 points for the Seawolves.

With this win, the Tommies move to 14-0 on the season, while the Seawolves fall to 5-10 and remain in sixth place.
