Le 21 octobre, des milliers de Néo-Brunswickois se sont rassemblés pour suivre les résultats de l’élection provinciale de 2024. Après six années d’un gouvernement progressiste-conservateur, les libéraux ont gagné avec un gouvernement majoritaire.  

Cette élection est entrée dans l’histoire : l’honorable Susan Holt est devenue la première femme élue comme premier ministre du Nouveau-Brunswick, dix-sept femmes ont gagné un siège dans l’Assemblée législative et dix-neuf députés francophones ont été élus dans le parti libéral.

The overall results

The overall voter turnout was sixty-six percent. Votes for the Liberal Party increased by 27 percent in Saint John, by 23 percent in Fredericton, and by 16 percent in Moncton. In the Legislative Assembly, the Liberals have 31 seats, the Conservatives have 16 seats, and the Green Party has 2. The Liberal Party won all the ridings in Moncton and all, but the Saint John East riding, in Saint John.  

Le parti progressiste-conservateur a perdu neuf sièges lors de l’élection. Le parti vert a aussi perdu le siège de Kevin Arseneau, qui servait la circonscription de Kent North depuis 2018.  

Local ridings

Local ridings in Saint John and in the Kennebecasis Valley saw a flip from progressive conservative to liberal.  

Liberal MLA  Kate Elman Wilcott won the seat in Saint-John West Lancaster with 46.5 percent of the votes, compared to Kim Costain, who received 36.8 percent.  

Former Conservative Member of Parliament, now a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly, John Herron, won 39.3 percent of the votes against Faytene Grasseschi in the Hampton-Fundy-Saint Martin riding. 

In the Saint John Portland-Simons riding, Dr. John Dornan won the Liberal seat with 53.4 percent of the votes against Paul Dempsey.  

Liberal MLA, David Hickey won 56.9 percent of the votes against Adam Smith in the Saint John Harbour riding.  

In Rothesay, Alyson Townsend won 50.5 percent of the votes against Ted Flemming.  

In Quispamsis, Aaron Kennedy beat Blaine Higgs out of his riding. After fourteen years in the Legislative Assembly and six years as Premier, Blaine Higgs no longer has a seat as an MLA. The former Premier won 44.1 percent of the votes, while Aaron Kennedy won the riding with 46.5 percent.  

All of these ridings were Progressive Conservative after the 2020 election. The only Progressive Conservative Candidate to keep their seat in the local riding region was Glen Savoie who won 43.6 percent of the votes in Saint John East.  

Les discours des partis politiques

Le nouveau premier ministre du Nouveau-Brunswick a commencé son discours en remerciant les personnes qui ont voté pour l’équipe Holt et tous les candidats qui ont servi le public pendant l’élection. Elle a donné ses remerciements en anglais, en français, en Maliseet, en Mi’kmaw et en Passamaquoddy. Elle a aussi pris le temps de remercier tous les bénévoles, qui ont travaillé fort pour informer les électeurs avant l’élection. Finalement, elle a remercié toutes les femmes qui l’ont précédée et qui ont rendu son succès possible;  

L’honorable Brenda Robertson, la première femme élue comme députée dans l’Assemblée législative et la première femme ministre du cabinet provincial.  

L’honorable Shirley Dysart, la première femme candidate libérale élue et la première femme présidente dans l’Assemblée législative.  

L’honorable Elizabeth Weir, la première femme chef d’un parti politique, élu dans l’Assemblée législative.  

L’honorable Aldéa Landry, la première femme acadienne, ministre du cabinet provincial.  

L’honorable Susan Holt a également mis l’accent sur son but d’améliorer le système de soins de santé, le coût de vie et les programmes d’éducation. Elle a confirmé que la population du Nouveau-Brunswick est prête pour des changements. Holt a assuré qu’avec son équipe, la population aura un gouvernement qui nous soutiendra quelle que soit la langue dont nous parlons, le couleur de notre peau, où nous habitons, qui nous aimons et comment nous identifions.  

Blaine Higgs, delivering his speech only in English, congratulated Holt on her win and thanked his family, the Progressive Conservative candidates, and the volunteers for their support. He reflected on his time as Premier and the work of the Progressive Conservative Party to improve healthcare, build the economy, and put the province on a good path forward. He encourages the Progressive Conservative MLAs to form a strong opposition and hold the government accountable. He will also make a formal announcement about his future in the Progressive Conservative Party after a caucus meeting.  

Cette élection a marqué l’histoire du Nouveau-Brunswick avec la représentation des femmes et les francophones. Avec les résultats de l’élection, les Néo-Brunswickois ont hâte pour un avenir avec l’équipe Holt et nous verrons pendant les quatre prochaines années ce que le nouveau gouvernement peut nous apporter.
