Accounting students looking for a great opportunity to not only improve their leadership skills, but create networks with the second largest professional services network in the world would benefit greatly from the Deloitte National Leadership Conference.

In an information session held on Tuesday, March 12, Danielle Boucher, a campus recruitment specialist from Deloitte, explained the value of this conference to students looking to become Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) with the company.

The three day conference, held from Aug. 21 to 23, will be located at Deerhurst, a five-star resort in Huntsville, ON and it’s jam-packed with both indoor/outdoor workshops and group activities that focus on team building, leadership and negotiation skills. Other fun events include beach barbeques, dances and free time that lets you enjoy what the resort has to offer.

Of course, it isn’t all fun and games. According to Boucher, the event is a great networking experience and a good idea if you want to work with the company in the future. The conference gives students the opportunity to interact with Deloitte professionals of all levels and network with people that they could potentially be doing jobs with later on, all in an atmosphere different from a recruiting session.

Students have the chance to listen to partners from all service lines in the company and get an in-depth look into what a day in the life is like for people in positions that they strive to fill. According to the presentation, the conference is a real eye-opening experience for those in attendance.

Boucher referred to the event as “a way for [students] to get to know Deloitte, and for Deloitte to get to know [the students]” in a relaxed environment.

The program usually takes about 85 to 100 students from across Canada, but only two or three of those are from the Atlantic Provinces. It’s a small number, but if you’re a fit for the selection criteria, it’s definitely worth a shot. Deloitte is looking for students with a great variety of extracurricular activities under their belt, exceptional leadership qualities, a keen interest in pursuing their CA/CPA and a strong academic background.

Applying is easy; visit deloitte.ca/campus and fill out all of the required information. Aside from this, you’re also going to want to send in a resume and a cover letter outlining why you’ve chosen Deloitte and what you can bring to the table. A print out of your most recent unofficial transcript is also required. The conference is open to first, second and third year undergraduate business students and the deadline is March 22, 2013 at 5 p.m.

“One of the most common feedbacks I’ve gotten from students is that they wish it was longer,” says Boucher.
