Who the hell am I voting for? – Council + BOG

490
Reading Time: 8 minutes

Out of 20 councillor and board of governors candidates asking for your vote only 10 took the time and made the effort to let us (and you) know a little more about themselves.

We will let you decide who will put in the effort to make your SRC and campus a better place.

If you don’t know who to vote for yet, we hope the following will help.

 Business Representative

Kieran Jardine
1st year, Business Administration

Favourite cookie: White Chocolate Chip Macadamia Nut

Why are you running? I really enjoyed being on SRC the past two terms and i would love to do it again next year!

How did you find out about the election? Through SRC.

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? Helping faculty acknowledge issues and concerns students may feel hinder their academic success and to help provide the best overall environment for student social life as possible.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John what would it be? Definitely try to get more events planned that will draw a larger crowd. All of the events this year were awesome but not as many people showed up for some of them as others, drawing out some of the potential greatness the smaller events could of had if more students came.

2nd year, Business Administration – Marketing

Favourite cookie: Macadamia nut

Why are you running? I have been on SRC for two years now, first as First Year Representative, and for a second time as the Social Representative. I love the SRC and being involved with the student body. I am running for Business Representative because I am passionate about the business program and all of the opportunities it has for its students. I look forward for the opportunity to represent the business students on the SRC!

How did you find out about the election? I learned about the election through our council meetings, also last year it was at this time of year so I was expecting it.

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? The most important service the SRC provides is the engagement the company has with the students. Everybody on the SRC is very approachable and respectful; you can always walk up to any of us and have a genuine conversation. We are always there if anybody has any questions or concerns they need help with.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John what would it be? One thing at UNB Saint John I would change would be the school spirit. I referee high school hockey and I see how passionate and the school spirit they have when cheering on their school team, I would like to see students of UNB Saint John do that for all of their great sports teams.

Arts Representative

Kyle Jordan Rogers
1st year, Bachelor of Arts

Favourite cookie: Those Pillsbury Snowman cookies!

Why are you running? I’m running for this position because my dream is to get into Politics, to represent people, to make sure that they have a voice in whatever way I possibly can, while having as much fun as possible. If I can be given the opportunity to make sure that my fellow students have a voice, while also representing the amazing Arts program we have on our campus, that’s all I could ever ask for right about now.

How did you find out about the election? I found out about the election through the posters that were scattered around campus, plus I was reminded more than a few times by my friends, asking me if I was going to run; so if I end up winning, it’s mostly thanks to them for the encouragement.

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? The two most important services that the SRC provides are, firstly, to give a voice to the students. A singular student, or even a small group of students, may not be able to solve an issue but with the SRC behind them, they can have the ability to achieve so much more. The second, is to be an organized body that can make the best possible experiences for our fellow students, so they can continue to be passionate about being students of UNBSJ, and have something to be really proud about.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John what would it be?  It would definitely have something to do with having more music. We have such a rich history of great music here in the Maritimes, and we have people coming from all over the world who would be able to share their culture’s music. I’m talking more coffee houses, more events to appreciate and showcase a wide variety of cultures. Ya know? Have some spice to make people interested and invested in the events that we’re having on campus!

Katherine Higgins
3rd year, Bachelor of Arts – English

Favourite cookie: White Chocolate & Macadamia Nut, hands down.

Why are you running? The UNBSJ Arts Faculty is an amazing group of talent and creativity, from the professors to first years. I’m very proud to be apart of this faculty but sometimes it seems for all the talent and programs, Arts students don’t shout out for the recognition they deserve and aren’t always represented for their great accomplishments. As Arts Rep I want to be the person promoting our wonderful students and all the clubs and societies on campus to the academic and local community.

How did you find out about the election? I had been reading up on the recent SRC accomplishments and was curious as to how I could get involved. As fate would have it the Facebook group posted election information at the same time.

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? It provides a great framework for managing student affairs like the recent mental health initiatives, student focused financial matters, providing reliable campus information etc.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John what would it be? Campus involvement, and I don’t just mean Frosh Week and Bingo Night. Parties are part of the university experience of course, but so is knowing what internships are available to you and where exactly portions of tuition fees are benefiting you. Given the size of our institution there is no reason not to know if a prof is researching a specific area you could gain experience from or what societies are hosting international artists and academics. This is a great school with so many opportunities to take advantage of, so start!

Board Of Governors

Jordan Tracey
1st year, Business Administration

Favourite cookie: Oatmeal Chocolate Chip

Why are you running? I am re-running for Board of Governors because it is important to have a strong student voice on the board.

How did you find out about the election? I found out about the election via the Facebook posts from UNB SRC.

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? Providing an exceptional student experience and lobbying for student needs to the government on behalf of the students.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John what would it be? I would like to change the Ward Chipman building into a student centre that encompasses the SRC, the campus bar or similar social gathering spot, and other student services such as academic advisors and counselling services.

International Representative

Pape Mamadou Seck
2nd year, Computer Science

Favourite cookie: Chocolate Dip cookie

Why are you running? The reason why I am running is because as an outspoken individual, I have what it takes to serve as a voice between the international community and the SRC. Another reason is to push through for more favourable policies regarding the international student community.

How did you find out about the election? I am quite involved with the SRC already since I am the president of the multicultural society, so I keep abreast with activities concerning the SRC.

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? Safe Ride has been beneficial for most of the students, especially for international students that do not own a car. Also the discount they provide for students from Sobeys, Superstore, Boston Pizza… is quite interesting and very helpful.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John what would it be? A burning concern affecting the international students is the continual increase in cost of international fees. So I would like to advocate for better policies regarding these situations.

Science, Applied Science and Engineering Representative

Billy Jensen
1st year, Environmental Science

Favourite cookie: Smiley Face Cookies from Timmies

Why are you running? Because I want to get involved in the Science faculty and have a strong voice in the decisions surrounding it.

How did you find out about the election? Through current members of the SRC.

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? Social gatherings because they help create connections within students from various faculties.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John what would it be? I would like to make the student atmosphere a more vibrant and outgoing experience.

Hannah Wallace
3rd year, Science: Bio-Psych

Favourite cookie: chocolate chip with salted caramel

Why are you running? I got involved with the SRC because I felt (and still do feel) like it is up to the students to make UNBSJ the best place it can be. I love our school and I love working to make it better so getting involved with the SRC was the perfect way to do that! I want to be a person that students can count on to help make their voices heard.

How did you find out about the election? Since I am currently on council, I heard the official dates at one of our council meetings!

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? I think Orientation Week is the most important service the SRC provides. O-week provides students the opportunity to find their place (meeting new people, learning what is available academically and socially) and set up their university career for success.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John, what would it be? I would like to see many more students involved in extracurricular activities and student life on campus. I especially hope we have a higher voter turnout for this year’s elections.

MinJi Kim
1st year, Science

Favourite cookie: No Answer

Why are you running? I am running to know more about UNB and to get more involved in UNB, and also to make more friends, as one of the SASE students. I think running SASE Rep is one a good way to jump into it.

How did you find out about the election?  I found out about the election at open house. At the beginning of first year, I ran in the election for first year rep (I didn’t win it). I also heard about it from my friends and Facebook.

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? As a student, the Safe ride is the most important service provided by the SRC. Same as most student, I often study late, and it takes almost 1 hour on the bus to go home, but when I take safe ride, it saves me half of the time on the road. The safe ride is one of the most important and most needed services provided by the SRC for students.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John what would it be? This year’s career fair mainly for business students, it was slightly disappointing. If I could change one thing at UNBSJ as SASE Rep, I would add more SASE related companies at the career fair, such as summer jobs at research institutes, science camps, and at science club for kids etc.

 Athletics rep

Sofia Lamprea
3rd year, Arts

Favourite cookie: this is probably the hardest question on here but I have to say oreos.

Why are you running? I’m running because athletics is something that important to me. I have been a part of the fitness community at UNBSJ since my first year, and since that time I have seen opportunities for improvement and have had ideas about changes that could be made in order to make fitness at UNBSJ more enjoyable. Normally when people think about athletics they just think about the varsity athletes and while it does include them it also includes anyone else who is using the facilities and services provided. I want to be able to be a voice not just for the varsity athletes but for everyone.

How did you find out about the election? I found out about the elections through facebook postings.

In your opinion, what is the most important service provided by the SRC? In my opinion the most important thing the SRC does is give the student body a voice and a say about important matters that affect us. The SRC gives us a voice both in and outside of the campus community. They make it so that we can have a say in what goes on around our campus so that our university experience is that more special.

If you could change one thing at UNB Saint John what would it be? If I could change one thing it would be to make fitness something more students genuinely enjoy. I want to find a way to make athletics fun for everyone and not some kind of intimidating chore.

There are also seats for Mature Representative and Social Representative, however candidates running for both positions couldn’t be bothered to respond.
