UNB-SRC organizes winter orientation

This week, the UNB-SRC announced the schedule for its orientation for incoming students for the Winter 2021 semester.

The orientation will last for three weeks and will combine in-person and virtual events.  

The schedule shows the activities and dates to pick up special kits. Incoming and current students are welcome to participate in the virtual and in-person activities. 

January 6-8 

All events of this week of activities will be virtual meetings and they started on Wednesday, January 6. 

The first event consisted of a meeting on Teams with the president of the SRC, Patrick Hickey, followed by “Brunch and Brush”, an hour-long painting exercise. 

There was also a virtual Meet and Greet with the Faculty of Science, Applied Sciences and Engineering where the Dean and faculty from Engineering, Nursing, Psychology, Biology, Statistics, Math, Health Sciences, and Computer Science explained what students should expect academically and gave advice. 

On Thursday, January 7, Trish Pendleton, the Sexual Assault Support Advocate, and Catherine Paulin, the Mental Health Counsellor, will have a virtual Mental Health and Wellness Session at 10 a.m. to discuss mental health resources available on-campus and mental health techniques. 

At 2 p.m., the Faculty of Arts will have its own Meet and Greet on Teams. Students can meet the dean of the faculty and its professors while learning about the offered majors and disciplines. 

On Friday, January 8, there is a virtual workout scheduled at 10 a.m. The workout will focus on how to stay active in small spaces and It will consist of a 30-minute guided session.  

The next event of the day will be a virtual meet and greet at 2 p.m. with the Dean and professors of the Faculty of Business, where they will review each degree students can obtain within the faculty. 

January 11-14

On Monday, January 11, the Office of the Registrar Services will hold a virtual session at 10:30 a.m. This session will review how to use UNB Portal E-services, financial menus, and services offered by the Office of the Registrar. 

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., new students must register here to be able to pick up an orientation kit at the Winter Orientation Team welcome table on campus. 

The welcome table will be inside the gym in the G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre. 

At 7 p.m., there will be the monthly SRC Trivia Night on Teams.  

On Tuesday, January 12, there is a virtual session where both financial aid and financial services staff will explain information about billing, fees, payment plans, bursaries, and timelines. 

That night, there will be a virtual watch party where students can watch “The Social Network”. Students are required to download “Netflix Party” before the event. 

On Wednesday, January 13, there will be the “Academic Advising 101” virtual session by the Office of the Registrar at 10:30 a.m. to review academic information about timelines, creating a schedule, processes, and their class timetable. 

At 4 p.m., the SRC executives will host icebreakers and games for students. The event will be on Teams

On Thursday, January 14, a virtual meeting is being held for international students at 10:30 a.m., where they can ask questions and get advice about topics such as life in Canada, immigration, etc.  

That night, the SRC will hold a virtual bingo night on Teams at 7 p.m. There will be multiple chances for students to win prizes.
