Weekly Clubs and Societies series: The Golden Key Society

The Baron is hosting a weekly series introducing readers to the clubs and societies on campus here at UNB Saint John.

Golden Key recognizes high-achieving students academically and connects them with professional and social opportunities through a network of universities.

Golden Key Society’s objective is to help members reach their full potential via academic, leadership, and outreach programs. It also strives to bring students and faculty members from various faculties and degree programs together to form a cohesive network. 

What kind of events does the UNBSJ Golden Key Society host?

The club hosts a variety of events, such as trivia nights, fundraisers for local non-profits, and community cleanups. The club has taken the initiative to host at least one event per month in addition to their annual New Member Recognition Event (NMRE). 

What is the New Member Recognition Event (NMRE)?

The New Member Recognition Event (NMRE) is an annual event that is held to recognize the honorary members and welcome new members to join the society. 

Is there a membership fee for Golden Key?

There is a fee of $95 to join the society. The international headquarters and the local chapter split the membership cost. The membership fee pays for membership benefits and helps local chapters in a variety of ways, such as:

  • Local chapter scholarships where applicable;
  • new Member Recognition Event
  • society scholarships for members
  • local academic, service, and social activities
  • international Summit
  • headquarters support to chapters (staff support, mailings, technology, benefits development, public relations).

Please Note: No fees are required to join the UNBSJ Golden Key Society. The $95 payment is associated with getting a membership for Golden Key

What kind of events, scholarships, and offers does the membership for Golden Key provide?

Golden Key awards thousands of scholarships to students from all around the world who have made it to the top 15% GPA of their school and have registered for the membership. For additional information about each scholarship, please visit this website or email CYarbrough@goldenkey.org. 

Besides providing some of the best scholarships, the International Summit provides members with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to form connections that can be invaluable through their professional lives. In countries like Australia, Canada, South Africa, and the United States, Golden Key stages large-scale events for its international community.

Natasha Taylor, Public Relations Director of the UNBSJ Golden Key Society, said that the club highly values integrity, collaboration, innovation, respect, diversity, excellence, and social engagement. She also added that the society invites all UNBSJ students to engage in their events whether or not they are formal members of the society.
