Hello UNBSJ! I cannot believe that it is already the end of February. Like most of you, February was a very busy month for me and The Baron and I’m excited to tell you all about it.

Shoutout to the wonderful staff at The Baron

I had a very unplanned trip to Montréal this month, and I’d like to thank all the wonderful staff at The Baron who helped me work remotely! I am extremely grateful for The Baron’s Copy Editor, Logan Bishop, and all of his hard work. He is a great colleague to bounce ideas off of and is a fantastic Copy Editor.

The beautiful view I had of downtown Montréal while taking meetings for The Baron (Emily Wheaton/The Baron)

I’d also like to give a shoutout to our Office Manager, Tamara Holmes for working hard to get us ready for tax season.

And all the amazing Staff Writers, you make this job so fun! I love hearing all of your creative ideas and working together to bring your visions to life.

NASH85

Tamara and I headed to Hamilton, Ontario this month for the 85th annual Canadian University Press (CUP) conference hosted by McMaster University’s The Silhouette. This conference was transformational.

It was a fantastic experience to discuss all things university press with papers from across the country. Learning from others was a great experience and I am excited to start implementing some new policies at The Baron to be more efficient, effective, and representative of the student body. My favourite part of the conference was digging deep into topics and finding solutions through conversations with small and large presses.

Our friends from the Dal Gazette and the Meliorist (Emily Wheaton/The Baron)

The Baron and the Dal Gazette from Halifax were the only papers East of Québec, so we were excited to represent Atlantic Canada. We made some great connections with other CUP newspapers like our new friends from the Cascade at the University of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, The Runner from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia, and the Meliorist from ULethbridge in Alberta.

A big congratulations to our fellow New Brunswick Press, the Aquinian for winning two John H. McDonald Awards for Excellence in Student Journalism!

We have already started to plan out our fall at The Baron with great resources from the conference!

CUP Atlantic Representative

The Baron is a member of the Canadian University Press which is the largest collection of student journalists in the world. They are holding their annual general meeting next week to vote in new members of their board.

Emily Wheaton/The Baron

I am excited to announce that I am running for Atlantic representative for the academic year of 2023 to 2024. I am really excited about this opportunity because I am eager to be a voice for smaller schools that do not offer journalism programs at CUP.

Final thoughts

Just like last semester’s reading week, we will not be publishing from March 6 to 10. Make sure you are following us on Instagram at thebaronsj to keep up to date on all of our content.

I hope you all enjoy your reading week and use it as an opportunity to get ahead in your course load. Most importantly, take some time for yourselves, because you deserve it after a hectic midterms season!

I am excited to see what March brings!

Many thanks,

Emily Wheaton

Emily is in her fourth year of Political Science. She loves studying and academics which follows into her research work. She's a stern black coffee drinker and is a proud Acadienne. When she's not working or doing school work, you can find Emily listening to 70s music on vinyl and watching Parks and Recreation. If you ask her about parliamentary institutions, she won't stop talking.
