At the UNBSJ Campus, there has recently been a demand for an LGBTQIA2S+ safe space for people of the community, and its allies which has been brought forward by a fourth-year UNB Student named Keila Gallardo.
The Baron sat down with Gallardo to talk about this demand, and this is what she said.
What started this demand?
“I had to decide on a project for the course UNIV 4501 that would change campus for the better. This initiative has been talked with the executives for a while and I wanted to use the chance the course is giving me to make it a reality.”
Has this demand been made before?
“Not that I know of. After all, True Colours was just created in 2019.”
What would you and maybe other students want to see in this safe space?
“So far, students have been asking for resources from local queer organizations, anxiety relief tools, and overall just a calm space for people to socialize. I would also like to see a safe space for queer students to interact with each other in the future.“
Do you have a specific area that you’d like to have the room?
“I’m still working on what space would be used for that with the university but keep your eyes on True Colour’s social media for more news about it.”
Has UNB gotten back to you on this demand?
“Right now, I’m working with UNB to see if a space like that is possible on campus. More information will be released through True Colour’s social media soon.”
What can students do to help move this demand forward?
“At this moment, students can fill out the survey and attend events on campus that focus on diversity and community. We have to let UNBSJ know that there are people who need and will use the space.”
